A person who is a party member will be able to run independently in the upcoming parliamentary elections. The difference between a candidate from the party list and an independent candidate is purely juridical, member of the Central Election Commission Iurie Ciocan stated in the program “Fourth power” on N4 channel, IPN reports.

Iurie Ciocan said the person who runs independently in a single-member constituency is not obliged to inform any institution that they are members of a particular party. This way, the candidates who will enter Parliament and will announce that they are members of a political organization will face no problem. “The elected person goes to Parliament and holds the seat of MP. The difference is strictly juridical. The candidate of a party or an electoral bloc is fielded by the given party or bloc, while the independent candidate runs independently. The law says nothing about party membership in this context. Also, the parties can field not only party members, but anyone,” stated the CEC member.

Iurie Ciocan said there is no legal restriction as to the holding of a referendum simultaneously with the parliamentary elections. Thus, if Parliament decides this, the people on February 24 could receive five ballots given that three issues could be raised in the plebiscite: insertion of the European integration objective in the Constitution, the Parliament reform and the citizens’ right to recall an MP.

Iurie Ciocan said that if he had the power to decide, he would plead for enabling the members of the Cabinet to also serve as MPs and for excluding the incompatibility of posts in this regard.
