Parliament is obliged to set the date of the presidential elections after the expiration of the incumbent President’s term in office, but in the current conditions it’s not clear when exactly this date should be fixed, the chairman of the Central Election Commission Iurie Ciocan said in the program “Pahomi” on Realitatea TV channel, IPN reports.
“Parliament must set the date of the presidential elections after the tenure of the incumbent President expires. The Electoral Code adopted in 1999 stipulates an electoral period of three months of the setting of the election date, but does not provide when this date should be set exactly. We are switching over from a model of choosing the head of state to another,” said the Commission’s chairman.
Iurie Ciocan considers that the presidential elections will be held this year. “I see no prospects for Parliament to delay the holding of the presidential elections. I think the date will be fixed in a reasonable timeframe. I bank on the common sense of the MPs,” he stated.
According to Iurie Ciocan, Nicolae Timofti will be able to work after March 23, when his term in office expires. “The President elected legally must complete his duties and will hold the position until the next head of state elected legally is sworn in. The post is held on an interim basis if the President resigns or in case of death,” he said.
