The Centru Court of Chisinau on March 20 decided that ex-MP Iurie Bolboceanu will be held in remand detention for 30 days. The former MP was arrested on March 17 on charges of treason and espionage against the Republic of Moldova. The information was confirmed for IPN by Cristina Popovici, press officer of the Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases.
After the court decision was pronounced, Iurie Bolboceanu was taken to the remand prison of the General Police Commissariat. His lawyers can challenge the decision of the Centru Court in the Appeals Court within ten days.
The ex-MP faces up to 20 years in jail. Prosecutor who deals with this case Anatolie Pitel, in a press briefing on March 20, said that during almost a year and a half, Iurie Bolboceanu had provided information of major interest about the Republic of Moldova to a foreign espionage service. The investigation was opened last October. On March 19, the former MP was indicted.
