The European Parliament and the Parliaments of the EU member states fulfilled their commitment to ratify the Association Agreement with the Republic of Moldova. It’s now the Moldovan authorities’ turn to continue, by all ways possible, the process of implementing this accord so as to come closer to the EU standards, historian and publicist Gheorghe Cojocaru said in an interview for Radio Free Europe, quoted by IPN.

The ratification of the agreement by Italy, which was the last of the 28 EU member states to ratify the accord, completed the legal procedure for the new status granted to Moldova a year and a half ago to meet all the necessary conditions and to take effect.

Gheorghe Cojocaru said the ‘theft of the century’ and Moldova’s transformation into a captive state caused harsh reactions on the part of Brussels and the suspension of programs under implementation. However, the completion of the procedure for ratifying the Association Agreement is a proof of the fact that Moldova will not be abandoned in a gray area of arbitrariness.

As to statements that the EU’s umbrella did more harm than good to the Moldovan people, Gheorghe Cojocaru said not the European Union is to blame for what is going on in Chisinau today, but a part of the Moldovan political class that discredited the European course and the idea of European integration. That’s why the cleaning of the political class will have to be regarded as a part of the difficult process of making the rapprochement with the EU an irreversible objective.
