Prime Minister Vlad Filat, in a news conference on March 25, said the attempts to interfere in the policy concerning the excises on tobacco products and strong alcoholic beverages arouse concerns. “It seems that those who try to change the fiscal policy pursue interests,” he stated. Vlad Filat described the comments on the Government’s intentions regarding indirect taxation as cynical and false. “The proposed document is to be implemented from January 1, 2012 and this provision can come into force only after a special law is adopted, which would provide the instruments needed to achieve this objective. We do not aim to put additional taxes, but to create the mechanisms needed to make all the people in Moldova to pay taxes. Those who have palaces and cars should pay so that the state is functional and the employees are paid,” the Premier said. He also said that the Government does not have the necessary political support in Parliament and will have to resign. “If the state budget, the social insurance budget and the health insurance budget are not approved, the executive will not have the instruments needed to implement its program and thus to fulfill the commitments made to the foreign partners,” Vlad Filat said. The draft state budget law for 2011 was approved by the Government on March 12 and is to be adopted in Parliament.
