The experts haven’t yet decided whether the National Philharmonic “Sergey Lunkevich” will be repaired, renovated or reconstructed. Examination works are currently executed and the specifications are being drawn up. The Philharmonic’s administration said they want a new, modern, equipped building with proper acoustics. The part of the building with those columns in front will be most probably kept as it hasn’t been affected much.

“We are also waiting for the conclusion. The specialists are working, but we will see what decision will be taken yet,” the National Philharmonic’s director general Svetlana Bivol stated in an interview for RFE/RL’s Moldovan Service that is quoted by IPN.

According to her, they support the idea of keeping that front building with columns. Anyway that part of the construction erected by Voitsehovski at the start of the 1960s is somehow representative. However, they surely want a new building.

The director said that about 1.4 million lei was collected into the account of the Ministry of Finance and into the Philharmonic’s account. Also, the Government allocated money for performing a series of works, such as collection of waste and fragments and working out of the specifications. “The project was coordinated by Mister Chistol, but he left the ministry and it is now harder to manage the situation and understand the state of affairs. I hope a lot things will return to normality,” stated Svetlana Bivol.

At the end of last September, the National Philharmonic “Sergey Lunkevich” was seriously damaged by a large fire. The ceiling of the main hall of the building caved in.
