The Republic of Moldova made significant progress as regards the liberalization of the visa regime, Director General for Home Affairs of the European Commission Stefano Manservisi said in a news conference in Chisinau. He stated that Moldova must work as progressively now so as to switch to the second phase of the dialogue on visa liberalization, Info-Prim Neo reports. “Moldova made significant progress. A number of laws were implemented and this enables us to say that the first phase of the dialogue was completed. It’s time to switch to the second phase, i.e. the implementation of the legislation,” said Stefano Manservisi, adding it depends on Moldova when it will switch to the second phase of the dialogue. Deputy Minister of External Affairs and European Integration Natalia Gherman said the remaining six bills are now discussed within the relevant parliamentary commissions. “Immediately after they are debated and adopted, we will inform the European Commission about this additional progress made. The Commission will ask the council of the member states and the European Parliament to allow Moldova to switch to the second stage of the Moldova-EU action plan on visa liberalization,” she stated. The Government of Moldova received the action plan on visa liberalization at the beginning of last year. The document contains the reforms that Moldova must implement for its citizens to be able to travel visa free in the EU. Earlier, Foreign Minister Iurie Leanca said this will be possible at the end of 2012 already. If not, he promised he will resign.
