Iskra Stal Ribnita have won the Moldova Cup for the first time in the club’s history. On Thursday, May 26, the Iron Men defeated Olimpia Balti 2-1, Info-Prim Neo reports. Thanks to this success, Iskra Stal will represent Moldova in the Europa League. All the goals were scored in the first half. Iskra’s Ukrainian player Olexandr Suchu opened the score with a header. Olimpia leveled 11 minutes later, when Gheorghe Ovsiannicov shot from 23 meters. It took the Ribnita side only 3 minutes to restore their lead, as Eugen Gorodetchi netted a free kick from the edge of the area. Olimpia could have leveled once again before half-time, but Jerome Robens hit the post. The game was very balanced after the break. Olimpia searched for the equalizer, but Iskra defended their slight advantage resolutely. The second half saw no goals scored and Iskra won the trophy. After the final, the Olimpia chairman, Serghei Chiseliov, blasted the refereeing and the Moldovan Football Federation. “We’ve made some mistakes in the very beginning and they sealed the result”, said Nicolae Bunea, Olimpia coach. “The team is overwhelmed by emotions. We’re very happy”, declared Valerii Cialii, Iskra Stal coach. Iskra became the 7th team to win the Moldova Cup. Since 1992, Bugeac Comrat, Tiligul Tiraspol, Constructorul Chisinau, Zimbru Chisinau, Nistru Otaci and Sheriff Tiraspol have won this trophy. Sheriff are the competition’s most successful side, with 7 victories.
