Pregnant women when being admitted to the maternity hospital do not need to do a PCR COVID-19 test if they do not have symptoms of infection. A “yellow corridor” was instituted for pregnant women or new mothers who have symptoms typical of the novel coronavirus. They stay there until the diagnosis is confirmed or is not confirmed.
In a response to an inquiry made by IPN, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection said that all the patients confirmed with COVID-19 are tested again before discharge.
Under an order made by the Ministry, the pregnant women and new mothers confirmed with COVID-19 are admitted to Maternity Hospital No. 2 in Chisinau. This applies to women with mild and average forms of the infection from all over the country, including the suspect cases from the municipality of Chisinau. Pregnant women with serious and very serious forms of the infection are admitted to the National Clinical Hospital “Timofei Moșneaga”.
Following a rise in the number of cases of COVID-19, a perinatal COVID-19 unit of the second level was set up at the Bălți Clinical Hospital last June. This is intended for pregnant women and new mothers confirmed with the novel coronavirus, with average and serious forms, from the northern districts of Moldova.
In 2020, 236 women confirmed with COVID-19 gave birth at these institutions, 208 of whom at Maternity Hospital No. 2 in Chisinau. The women stayed in the hospital for an average period of 11.4 days. In the same period, three newborns were confirmed with COVID-19 at Maternity Hospital No. 2. The children were transferred for treatment to the specialized intensive care unit of the Mother and Child Institute.
The new mothers without COVID-19 stay in hospital for at most 72 hours, depending on the necessity of vaccinating the newborns according to the immunization calendar (HVB1 and BCG vaccines).
According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection, 793 pregnant women were confirmed with the novel coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.
