A prosecutor from Orhei town, detained four years ago for extorting 600 USD to dismiss a case of drunk driver traffic accident has learned the judge’s verdict. Criuleni Court has sentenced him to 7 years in prison. Also, the Court has applied a fine of 160 thousand MDL, depriving him of the right to hold functions of public dignity during 10 years. The prosecutor was caught red-handed at Orhei Prosecutor Office immediately after receiving the extorted money. The sentence can be appealed in court according to the relevant legal provisions.

The Prosecutor General Office has initiated a
criminal case concerning the state power usurpation fact between 7 – 14 June 2019, by the former government of the Republic of Moldova. According to the Prosecutor General Office, the criminal prosecution in this case shall be conducted by a criminal prosecution group, consisting of prosecutors, criminal prosecution and investigation officers from different subdivisions of law enforcement bodies. At the same time Andrei Năstase demanded lifting of parliamentary immunity of Vlad Plahotniuc, former PDM leader, who meanwhile had given up his deputy mandate.

The Democratic Party
deems illegal the Prosecutor General Office decision made on Monday, 5 August, which announced the initiation of a criminal case for state power usurpation during 7 – 14 June, by former government. PDM is waiting for the order of the Prosecutor General Office concerning the initiation of a criminal case in order to appeal it in court. “We are sure that the initiators of this file are not prosecutors but politicians from the ruling parties”, the PDM says. Article 339 (State power usurpation) of the Penal Code provides for a prison sentence of 10 to 15 years.

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Internal affairs Andrei Năstase, had today, 05 august,
a meeting with ad interim Prosecutor general and the Director of the Information and Security Service “to mark the moment of a new beginning for the rule of law in the Republic of Moldova”. According to Andrei Năstase, it is about loyal cooperation between the institutions in the spirit of best international practices, as the rule of law shall function as a whole in a unitary way. “I already said that we are committed to act for people and not against them, as happened until recently”, the Deputy Prime Minister mentioned.

Head of the European Union Delegation to Chișinău, Peter Michalko, maintains that
the EU will evaluate the state of affairs and the changes that will be made in the Republic of Moldova. “We will always give an honest assessment of changes. Moreover, we understand that this process of change will be a long-term one, requiring difficult and sometimes very complex decisions, that it won’t be all done in a week or a month. We hope that citizens also understand this”, the ambassador said in an interview for DW. “Unfortunately, we had seen a lack of progress in some sectors. For example, in the justice reform domain. Some setbacks in terms of democracy and rule of law standards too. We hope that from now on we will see improvements. With a new government, a reform program, we will witness the implementation of the Association Agreement in a fast and efficient manner which will bring better standards of living for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova”, the ambassador noted.

Three people accused of burning buses which belong to a transport company will appear on the defendant’s bench. The General Prosecutor Office mentions in a press release that the group organisers are two inhabitants of the capital, administrators of a transport company. Choosing as target the competitor company they acted by blackmailing and setting on fire the buses belonging to the competing company, located on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, Russian Federation and Czech Republic. According to estimations, the damage caused to the injured parties amounts to over 2.8 million MDL.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Nicu Popescu, says he will go to Moscow, at the beginning of September, in order to prepare the recently announced visit of Prime Minister Maia Sandu. According to the minister, the agenda hasn’t been yet discussed, but from the point of view of the Republic of Moldova, the agenda is based on the necessity to unblock the export possibilities for agricultural products mainly from the Moldovan market to the Russian market. The authorities would like to resume the economic ties with Moscow, without damaging the connections with the European Union. In an interview for Free Europe Radio, minister Popescu has assured that the Eurasian integration is out of discussion.

For almost 20 years, between 1 January 1999 and 1 August 2018 the degree of afforestaion of the Republic of Moldova has increased by 1,6 percentage points – from 9,6% to 11,2%. Moldsilva Agency specifies in an answer given to IPN press agency that the surface of the forest fund is of 423 thousand ha. 376 thousand represent forests. The strategy for the sustainable development of the forestry fund, approved in 2001, envisages an increase of the afforestation degree of the territory of the Republic of Moldova by 15%, by the year 2020. On 1 August 2018, in the forest structure of the Republic of Moldova predominated oak – 44,1%, followed by acacia – 33,1%, ash – 5,7%, hornbeam – 4,3% and poplar – 3%.

Save Basarabia Union (USB) decided to participate separately in the ordinary local and anticipated parliamentary elections in uninominal constituencies starting 20 October. “Save Basarabia Union will participate in the local and parliamentary elections as we are the only political force that, on the one hand opposes the current governing coalition and on the other hand they may bring unionist candidates into the Parliament, who do not accept half measures and who understood very well that the only solution for the Republic of Moldova is the integration into the European Union by uniting with Romania”, stated the party's press release.

Semion Altman is the
new manager of the national football team of Moldova. He replaced Alexandru Spiridon, who was dismissed. Altman is 73 years old, and 20 years ago, he made history at Zimbru football club, qualifying in the third preliminary round of the Champions League. Altman says he would like to end the current qualifying campaign on the 4th place, Moldova being included in the same grout with France, Turkey, Island, Albania and Andorra.
