IPN on February 19 published an OP-ED article entitled “Absorption of Western Balkans in Europe and spiral of “unionism” in Moldova” signed by politicla pundit Dionis Cenusa. According to the author, unionism in Moldova shows signs of consolidation, but Russia does not have a pronounced position on this. The politologist said that as long as the unionist movement firmly pleads for the union with Romania, the regions dominated by philo-Russian groups reserve the right to seek help from Russia if Moldova disappears as a state entity. Moldova’s exports in 2017 rose by 18.6% or US$ 380.5 million against 2016. Of the total exports, 67.7% were national goods, while the rest were re-exported goods. Exports to the EU member states represented 65.9% of the total exports. Read more…

“It is in the common interest to make sure that the situation in Eastern Europe is as predictable and stable as possible. The main role in achieving this objective is played by the Eastern-European countries. The balance-of-trade deficit of the Republic of Moldova shows that the county needs prudence in developing its production and export capacities and to also provide skilled labor force and to protect investors. For Moldova, it is very important to first of all conquer the domestic market of goods and services, programs director of the Institute for Development and Social Initiative “Viitorul” Viorel Chivriga stated in a TV program. According to him, the orientation of exports to the Western markets was influenced by the change in Moldovan companies’ views as these started to promote goods and services of a high quality. A lot of companies no longer believe in the Russian market and modify the geographical directions when exporting, the production process and promotion strategies. Read more…

The Munich Security Conference held last week confirmed that Russia is becoming increasingly authoritarian and does not take into account the interests of the state with which it should have partnership relations, Liberal MP Roman Botan, who heads the parliamentary commission on national security, defense and public order, stated in a TV program. The Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union will exchange views on the Republic of Moldova on February 26. It will focus among others on the implementation of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA), the EU’s engagement with the country and future perspectives ahead of the next parliamentary elections. An integrated air quality monitoring system aligned with the EU’s system is to be created in Moldova until 2028 by transposing the European legislation to the national one. During ten years, the emissions of pollutants in the air are to be halved.
