The multiple visits paid by Western officials to Chisinau represent a message of support for the European course of the Republic of Moldova, said political commentator Ion Tăbârță. According to him, the visit to Chisinau by the NB8 Speakers is the most eloquent example that Moldova fully broke international isolation and the country’s European course, by the model of the Baltic states, becomes more clear-cut, IPN reports.
The Parliament Speakers of the NB8 countries are paying a joint official visit to the Republic of Moldova on the initiative of Moldova’s Speaker Igor Grosu, in connection with the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis faced by the Republic of Moldova.
“It is an institutional platform of cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and some of the European Union member states. It is a platform that enables to lobby for the European cause of the Republic of Moldova. This group of eight states is very well connected to the realities of the region and is an additional trump card for supporting the European course of the Republic of Moldova. The fact that the European Parliament recommended that the Republic of Moldova should be granted the accession candidate country status is also a result of the influence of these states,” political commentator Ion Tăbârță stated in the program “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.
He noted that the obtaining of the candidate country status will offer Moldova multiple economic advantages. Until then, the country must further implement the provisions of the Association Agreement and improve the living standards of the citizens so that the realities in the Republic of Moldova are adjusted to the realities in the European Union.
“These visits can be explained by two main factors. The pro-European government in Chisinau is the first factor. The regional events, the war in Ukraine are the second factor. For the Republic of Moldova, it is important to implement the provisions of the Association Agreement. The granting of the candidate country status to the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia will be a political decision by the European Union. Is the EU ready for such a decision? I’m not so sure. We see the assertions of the French President Macron, who wants to find an alternative institutional platform. Everyone wonders what will happen to this European political community. Will this be an alternative to the European integration or an intermediary platform in the EU accession process of these states? ” stated Ion Tăbârță.
The Republic of Moldova completed and sent the two European Commission Questionnaires through which the country’s readiness for European integration is to be determined. The decision on the provision of the candidate country status is taken by the Council of the European Union by a unanimous vote. The Council is to meet later this month.
