In the Republic of Moldova, there are two sectors that need to be developed most of all –infrastructure and science, candidate for Prime Minister Ion Sturza said in a meeting with representatives of the academic community, where he said that we must keep the nation’s brains and the people’s analysis spirit, IPN reports.

“The education system must be a social elevator: up to a particular level education is free and compulsory; afterward the best and most hardworking ones should be able to move to a new social level. A diplomat told me once that in Moldova there are 31 universities, while in the Netherlands there are only six. There were also other states where many education institutions appeared amid the euphoria of the transition period, but later the labor market made the choice and things returned to normality. I would not start with radical actions, by jailing some and keeping others, but we must do something to adjust the curricula, improve the quality of studies and make sure that tuition is appropriate. You can ask yourselves why the people take loans for life to study at Harvard on US$100,000 a year, but do not come to the universities in Moldova, where a contract is €200 a year,” said Ion Sturza.

Speaking about the general situation in the country, the candidate for premiership said some less Orthodox decisions should be taken. “It does not mean that we must resort to shock therapy, but the elites must unite and help the country return to normality. My main concerns derive from the situation in the economic sector. Today the Ministry of Finance practically stopped providing financing and collects money for paying salaries and for social benefits. The situation is expected to be worse in 2016. We need about 4-5 billion lei to survive. Theoretically, this money could come from outside – the Romanian loan, the World Bank, the IMF, etc. With this money we can satisfy the social needs and cover some costs related to infrastructure,” stated Ion Sturza.

The candidate is convinced that next year Moldova will not have this money, no matter who is named head of Government, and money will come to the country only when there will be order in the banking system.

Ion Sturza was nominated candidate for Prime Minister on December 21. By January 4, this must present the government program and seek of a vote of confidence in Parliament. The new executive can be invested with at least 51 votes of MP.
