The use of drugs by young people is the most serious problem faced by Moldovan society, while the employees of the law enforcement bodies either protect them or are themselves involved in drug trafficking, prosecutor of Chisinau municipality Ion Diacov said in the talk show “Pahomi” on Realitatea TV channel, IPN reports.

According to Diacov, about 10,000 drug users are registered officially in Moldova. In reality, their number is much higher. “The statistics cover only those who were arrested accidentally or those who went to the doctor themselves. Let’s take an ordinary discothèque located in Chisinau. About 200 of the approximately 300 young people amusing themselves there are under the influence of drugs. The police daily arrest drivers who are under narcotic influence. To realize the real number of those who take drugs, we should multiply the number of those arrested by 1,000,” said the prosecutor.

Ion Diacov accused the judges and prosecutors of such a situation. “I earlier gave many examples when judges either acquitted or imposed mild punishments on drug traffickers. I also gave examples involving prosecutors. One of them is my former deputy. Last year alone, the courts acquitted ten drug traffickers. At the same time, a woman who has nine children, the eldest of whom is 14, was sentenced to five years and two months in jail for selling 85 grams of poppy straws. Maybe this woman didn’t even know what she was selling. It’s clear that she didn’t have money to pay and escape punishment,” he stated.

The prosecutor admits that there are highly corruptible employees in the law enforcement bodies and there is no political will to eradicate corruption. “I said even in 2001 that the fight against corruption must be started from judges and prosecutors. Those who exceed all the limits must be jailed. But the state institutions are very politicized. Our law on the prosecution service is among the most democratic in Europe. But over the last 15 years, the government has made everything possible to diminish the role of the prosecution service,” he stated.
