The Republic of Moldova is in a state of permanent threat from the Russian Federation. There is smell of gunpowder in the air, General Ion Costas stated in the program “Emphasis on today” on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.
“We are in a state of permanent threat from the Kremlin and if we don’t do as they want and do not follow the path to the Customs Union, the Eurasian Union, we will suffer the consequences,” said the general.
Ion Costas noted that as long as the Russian army stays on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, the Transnistrian conflict will exist. “If the14th Army disappears tomorrow, with all its munitions and together with the huge depots of Russian armament, I think the Republic of Moldova will be reunified in a week or two,” he stated.
According to the general, the Russian army’s presence on Moldova’s territory contributed to strengthening the separatist regime on the left side of the Nistru. Particular provocations could be now generated and the Moldovan authorities should be very vigilant.
Ion Costas noted that if the Republic of Moldova wants to be independent, the first step that it should take is to come closer to NATO so as to ensure the protection and existence of Moldovan statehood.
