The mandate of the General Mayor of Chisinau municipality has been validated today, November 11, by Chisinau Court, Râșcani headquarters. Thus, the candidate of the Socialist Party, Ion Ceban, assumes the duties of mayor, IPN reports.
Since 2000, Ion Ceban has been working at the capital's City Hall, being in charge of the development and coordination of projects in the social field. Between 2002-2004, he was director of the Projects Department, deputy director of the Government Information Network, while between 2004-2005 he was main consultant on internal policy within the Apparatus of the President of the Republic of Moldova. From 2005 to 2008, he was head of the Youth Programs Directorate at the Ministry of Education and Youth, as well as Deputy Minister of Education and Youth. Between 2008-2009, he held the position of head of the secretariat of the National Commission for European Integration within the Government. Between 2009-2011, he was consultant and head of the cabinet of the Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
Ion Ceban was a Member of Parliament (in 2011-2014 and 2014-2015). After the local elections in 2015, he became a municipal councillor, being also the chair of the Socialist Party group in the Chisinau Municipal Council. After the 2016 presidential elections and until 2018, he was presidential adviser on internal policy, secretary and spokesman of the President of the Republic of Moldova. Following the parliamentary elections of February 24, 2019, he becomes MP on the PSRM lists, and in June he is elected Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
Ion Ceban is a member of the Political Executive Committee of the Socialist Party and the party’s secretary for ideology. He ran for the position of general mayor of Chisinau municipality in the snap elections held in May-June 2018. He got through to the second round, together with Andrei Năstase, candidate of the Dignity and Truth Party. In the second round, the Socialist accumulated over 47% of the votes.
As part of this year's election campaign, Ion Ceban has promised that in a year and a half he will draw up the General Urban Development Plan. Within two years he promised to finalize the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan. It constitutes a planning document for the development of road and pedestrian infrastructure, public and private transport. Within a year and a half, the Socialist candidate also set out to promote an investment map of Chisinau, as well as to approve the concept of rehabilitation of the historical area of the city.
Ion Ceban was elected mayor general of Chisinau on November 3, in the second round, obtaining 52.39% of the votes. After the announcement of preliminary results, Ceban declared that, as soon as the mayor's term was validated, he would suspend his membership of the Socialist Party.
