The mayor general of the municipality of Chisinau Ion Ceban suggested that the government should obtain an authorization for the Assembly scheduled for May 21 through the agency of the Commission for Exceptional Situations (CES)  as the planned event is of national interest. According to the mayor, the participation of persons with views that are diametrically opposed to the government’s views cannot be banned, but the police must maintain public order so as to avoid disturbances, IPN reports.

Representatives of the Party of Socialists and of the Movement for People announced their intention to stage events in the Great National Assembly Square on May 21. Also, the State Chancellery notified the municipality of the intention to organize the European Moldova Assembly in the central square of Chisinau. The mayor noted he does not think the others will give up staging events in the central square and the government should therefore obtain the right to organize the Assembly through the agency of the CES.

“They must meet as there is a legal procedure. I can give them a hint. There is the Commission for Exceptional Situations. They did everything so far through the agency of the CES. Why should they invent something else? I consider the others will not give up. An authorization is issued in the order in which applications are submitted, but they should not prevent each other from rallying. Everyone should be satisfied with the formula in which they take part. I think the CES decision is the most reasonable one and no one will have any questions. It is the national priority, a national subject in which the country’s administration is involved. There is no game here,” the mayor stated in the program “Résumé” on RliveTV channel.

Ion Ceban called on the responsible bodies to maintain public order and to show maximum vigilance so as to avoid eventual provocations or disturbances on May 21.

“Everyone should act separately with their own agenda and should not hamper each other. Victory Day, Europe Day will be celebrated first and everyone has their own feelings in these circumstances. It is unacceptable to bring the people face to face. The police, the security bodies should do their best,” noted the mayor.

President Maia Sandu for May 21 announced an apolitical event called European Moldova. According to the official, the Assembly is to represent a message about the Moldovans’ wish to join the European Union and to be part of the free world, which will be transmitted to the international community.
