The Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office carries out a criminal investigation for the illegal collection of data protected by law, without the person's consent, while using special technical means destined for secret gathering of information. Four investigating officers, including a subdivision chief from the National Investigation Inspectorate of the IGP, and three prosecutors are suspects in the investigation.

The Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office said that the criminal investigation was started, at the beginning of September 2019, by the General Prosecutor in three criminal cases. The three cases were subsequently linked in a single procedure.

12 persons were interviewed as witnesses, while four persons were recognized and interviewed as the injured party. Additionally, several documents were collected and examined.

The Prosecutor's Office reaction was triggered by the presentation of the chairman of the Committee for national security, defense and public order, Chiril Moţpan, of a list of persons whose calls were tapped. The intercepted persons are experts, teachers, journalists and activists from different fields.
