The population of Chisinau municipality represents over 27% of the country’s population. At the same time, 60% of the value of the Gross Domestic Product is generated in Chisinau, and 55% of all the country’s industrial production is concentrated in the capital city. Vyacheslav Ioniță, an expert in economic policies at the Institute for Development and Social Initiatives “Viitorul”, said that the GDP difference between Chisinau and the rest of the country is fourfold and becomes more accentuated every year, IPN reports.
“Outside the municipality of Chisinau, there are not many people employed in the real sector of the economy. Only 40% outside Chisinau. 60% are concentrated here. In Chisinau, there are 2.4 times more employees than the average for the republic. The chance of a Moldovan to get a job in Chisinau is higher than in any other part of the country,” noted the expert.
Speaking about the turnover of enterprises in Chisinau, Vyacheslav Ioniță said that this year it will probably approach 500 billion lei. “The average turnover per capita is six times higher in Chisinau than in the rest of the country,” said the expert.
As for the population of the municipality, Vyacheslav Ioniță stated that in 2024 it will reach the 665,000 people or 27.5% of the country’s population. “We are talking about the population that is officially registered as living in Chisinau. There are still many others in the municipality who do not have the domicile, but study and work here. Chisinau also witnesses migration, but, unlike other localities, in the capital city the external migration is offset by internal migration. They also leave Chisinau, especially young people, but many come, especially young people, from other towns and villages of the country. In 2-3 years, Chisinau will be home to 30% of the country’s population. One in three citizens of the Republic of Moldova will be in the capital city,” said the expert.
Vyacheslav Ioniță also said that the municipality of Chisinau is several years younger than the rest of the country. “Our villages are old, the cities are in the middle, and the municipality of Chisinau is younger.” Referring to the housing sector, the economist said that out of 10 square meters that are currently being built in the Republic of Moldova, 7 meters are in Chisinau, and 3 meters – in the rest of the country.
