Internal conflict in Transnistria is much more acute than conflict between Tiraspol and Chisinau, experts

It is for the first time that the powers in the Transnistrian region experience such an acute internal conflict as they cannot come to a consensus as regards the adoption of the new Constitution of the breakaway republic. This conflict is much more dangerous than the conflict existing between Tiraspol and the official Chisinau. Statements to this effect were made by experts of the Association for Participative Democracy ADEPT and the Analytical Center Expert-Grup during the presentation of the 17th quarterly publication “Euromonitor”, which covers the period between October and December 2009, Info-Prim Neo reports. “This is for the first time that some of the founders of the Transnistrian regime demand openly that Smirnov {(Igor Smirnov, the leader of the unrecognized Moldovan Transnistrian republic – e.n..)} resign as he became an obstacle to the country's development, ” said Valeriu Prohnitski, the executive director of Expert-Grup. This internal tension is much more dangerous for the Transnistrian region and its stability. “The conflict endangers the functioning of this regime. Earlier, the authorities in Transnistria used the conflict with Chisinau as the most important 'scarecrow'. But the conflict between Chisinau and Tiraspol is not as intense as that between the Supreme Soviet and the Smirnov administration, Prohnitski said. He also said that the Moldovan authorities should not lay emphasis on this conflict that concerns the economic and commercial interests of the Transnistrian elites. “The official Chisinau, taking into account the events taking place in Tiraspol, must take measures, but should not try to antagonize the authorities in Transnistria as they will thus meet with Russia's resistance. If Russia had not supported this regime, it wouldn't' have survived. We already have the necessary experience. When we want to make the situation on the right bank of the Nistru better than in Transnistria, Russia intervenes to equalize the forces,” the expert said. In the same connection, Valeriu Prohnitski said that the Transnistrian conflict during October-December 2009 remained frozen, but saw rather interesting developments. “The Moldovan authorities started again to demand that Russia withdraw its troops from the eastern districts of Moldova,” he said. He stressed that within this period Moldova created conditions for the Transnistrian economic entities to work normally.
