A road traffic video monitoring and control center was inaugurated in Chisinau on October 16. The center belongs to the Information Technology Service of the Ministry of the Interior and was created with the support of the Chinese Government, IPN reports.
Attending the opening, Minister of the Interior Dorin Recean said the center will collect information from 41 video cameras that will be installed in the largest intersections in Chisinau and from police teams patrolling the streets. The police cars will be outfitted with special equipment through which the information about the violation of the traffic rules will be transmitted to the center. The vehicle owners will be informed about the violations and the fines imposed on them by mail. The practice of confiscating license plates will be thus gradually abandoned.
Prime Minister Iurie Leanca said the world experience of such video monitoring is beneficial. This system makes the drivers more disciplined and leads to a decrease in the number of road accidents. It will also help the authorities to fight crime and car thefts as it enables to identify the culprits.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of China to Moldova Tong Mingtao said the US$5 million project is a large-scale one in the cooperation between China and Moldova. The creation of the center is an important step towards increasing road safety and protecting human lives in Moldova. The diplomat voiced hope that the project will be implemented by the end of next month, as provided in the contract.
The Government of China offered 11 containers with supervision equipment, including video cameras, fixed radars and optic fiber cable.
The government officials attending the opening of the center said the given project will be extended all over the country next year.
