A list of over 700 persons has been submitted to the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) in order to register an initiative group for the referendum for the abrogation of the electoral amendments that introduced the mixed voting system.

The list has been submitted on Friday, December 29. CEC has to examine it and announce within 15 days if it registers the group or not, IPN reports.

Stefan Gligor, head of the initiative group’s executive bureau, said that the 700 people on the list attended the meeting where the initiative group was created two weeks ago. These people will collect signatures for the organization of the referendum. Gligor said that the success of this endeavor depends on the efforts of civil society.

“Electoral systems are the politicians’ entrance door to power, but also their exit door. They came into power via a relatively honest system, but now they changed the game rules because they want to stay in power”, argues Gligor.

If CEC registers the initiative group, they will have to collect at least 200,000 signatures in 2-3 months.
