The initiative group for organizing the referendum on the abrogation of the law by which amendments were made to the Election Code was set up on December 17 in a general assembly that involved almost 700 citizens with the right to vote. The activity of the initiative group will be coordinated by an Executive Bureau that will be headed by Stefan Gligor, programs director at the Center for Politics and Reforms. Stela Otica, exert at the Institute for Public Policy, will serve as deputy head of the Bureau, while “WatchDog” Valeriu Pasa as secretary general, IPN reports.
At the end of the assembly, Valeriu Pasa said more than 100 persons expressed their readiness to form part of the initiative group and to take part in the process of collecting signatures in favor of the referendum. In several days, the necessary packages of documents will be prepared for having the initiative group registered and for being issued with permits and subscription lists for launching the process of collecting signatures. The day the documents will be submitted to the Central Election Commission will be announced later.
“Our right to vote and choose the government we want was taken away from us because those who introduced the mixed system, the PDM and PSRM, want to remain in power. The people detest them, but they want to rule. We want to get rid of this government. We need this referendum to get back the right to choose the government” stated Valeriu Pasa.
For her part, Stela Otica said the women do not have many chances of entering Parliament based on the mixed electoral system that envisions the establishment of 51 single-member constituencies. “I will take part in the collection of signatures and our goal is to make sure that the future Parliament is representative for us,” she noted.
Chairman of the Executive Bureau Stefan Gligor said the referendum will put things right following the abuse committed by the Democratic Party. The acceptance of the mixed system will keep Moldova hostage of the current chaos. “During 26 years, we had elections and voted some and then others. We chose some who robbed us and we then chose others who also robbed us and now they stole our right to choose the government. The PSRM and PDM stole our right to remove them if we don’t like them,” he stated.
If the CEC registers the initiative group, this will have to collect at least 200,000 signatures in favor of the referendum during two-three months.
