A group of unaffiliated MPs, close to fugitive Ilan Shor, is proposing a draft law to change the way members of the Central Electoral Commission are appointed. Three of them, including the CEC chairman, would be proposed by the parliamentary opposition, IPN reports.
During a briefing, unaffiliated MP Vasile Bolea said that the draft was drafted to depoliticize the Central Election Commission, as he said international election monitoring missions recommend. "One of the CEC members is to be proposed by the General Assembly of Judges. Attention, not the Superior Council of Magistracy, which is a body captured and politicized by PAS", says Vasile Bolea.
Another CEC member is to be nominated by the General Assembly of Prosecutors, and four - by Parliament. Namely, one member to be nominated by the parliamentary majority and three - by the opposition. At the same time, the chairman of the commission would be chosen from among the members nominated by the opposition.
"Only in this way will we have a guarantee that the next elections to be held this year - the parliamentary elections - will be organized by a depoliticized Commission that does not play hand in hand with the ruling party. And it will not do the kind of debauchery that the Commission in its current composition has been doing for the last three to four years", says Vasile Bolea.
The current CEC was appointed by the Parliament with the vote of the majority of MPs. Of the nine members, one was proposed by the president of the country and eight were proposed by the parliamentary factions in proportion to the number of seats held.
As a result of legislative changes, as of 2026, the Central Election Commission will consist of seven members. One member will be appointed by the President of the country, one by the SJC, and one by the Government, upon the proposal of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Four other members will be appointed by the Parliament - two proposed by the parliamentary majority, one proposed by the parliamentary opposition and one proposed by civil society organizations representing the electoral field.
