The rate of inflation in the Transnistrian region last year was 4.7%, as opposed to 7% in 2018. According to the local ministry of economy, the slowdown in the rise of prices is even more visible compared with 2017, when the consumer price index was 11.8%, IPN reports.
The Transnistrian administration said the rise in food prices was more prominent. At the end of 2019, the rate of inflation on this segment was 9.95%. Nevertheless, the rise is smaller than in 2018, when food prices increased by 13.03% on average.
The prices of fruit and vegetables grew the most. Owing to the decline in the volume of local agricultural production, imports of vegetables increased. As a result, the prices of fruit and vegetables in 2019 grew by 24.1%.
The fluctuations in nonfood prices were not so substantial. Last year these prices declined by 0.01% on average. In the service sector, the inflation rate was 2.79%.
According to the National Bank of Moldova, the annual rate of inflation on the right bank of the Nistru in December 2019 was 7.5%. Earlier, National Bank governor Octavian Armașu said the inflation is expected to decline in 2020.
