No cases of infection from contaminated Spanish cucumbers were reported in Moldova, Health Division head Luminita Suveica said in the May 30 meeting of Chisinau City Hall officials, Info-Prim Neo reports. “They speak a lot about that bacteria that alarmed the Europeans, including Moldovans. According to the Public Health Center, there was no case of infection in Moldova. But the population should know the rules of hygiene and buy fruit and vegetables only from authorized places,” said Luminita Suveica. According to her, all the family doctors were instructed to familiarize the people with the prophylaxis measures so as to prevent the infection with Escherichia coli. The first cases of infection occurred in Spain two weeks ago. Four persons died and more than 100 got ill. Cucumbers, believed to have been imported from Spain, left people ill with hemolytic-uremic syndrome in Germany. The death toll in Germany from the outbreak of E.coli caused by infected cucumbers has risen to at least 10. The European Commission announced that the Netherlands and Denmark reported the first E.coli cases. In another development, Luminita Suveica informed that medical units work in the markets of the capital city, where the people can seek help if they feel ill. Doctors warn that prolonged exposure to sun is dangerous, especially for children, the elderly and persons suffering from hypothermia and cardiovascular diseases. They advise wearing light clothes made from natural materials and drinking at least a liter and a half of water a day.
