The Independent Journalism Center made public a new petition aimed at making the legislature complete the adoption of the legislative initiative to amend and supplement the Law on Access to Information that was submitted by a group of unaffiliated MPs on March 11, 2016 and is to be subject to debates, IPN reports.

According to the authors of the petition, the bill is designed to facilitate and improve the procedure for registering applications concerning access to information and to reduce the information provision period. The punishment for violating the legislation on access to information will become harsher.

The bill suggests reducing the period for providing official information by public authorities from 15 working days of the registration of the application to 10 calendar days.

The information provision period is reduced in connection with the implementation of the strategic program for the technological modernization of government (e-Transformation) within which many public services were digitized and modern databases were created. This simplifies the process of collecting and accessing official information.

The proposals over the bill to amend and supplement the Law on Access to Information were formulated by experts of the Independent Journalism Center within the advocacy campaign for modifying the given law.

The petition was launched within the advocacy campaign for improving the legal framework on information that is carried out by the Independent Journalism Center.
