Increasing number of users choose fixed broadband Internet access

The number of subscribers to fixed wireless broadband Internet access services last year increased by about 5% on a year before to 584,300. The number of subscribers whose connections enable speeds of over 100 Mbps rose by 23%, IPN reports, with reference to the national ICT regulator (ANRCETI).

According to the regulator, the number of subscribers connected to the Internet through fiber optic (fiber to the premises) and coaxial cable increased amid the decline in the number of subscribers connected to the network based on xDSL (Digital Subscriber Line) technologies. Thus, the number of users connected to the network through fiber optic grew by 10.3%, of those connected through coaxial cable by 8.2%, while of those connected to the network based on xDSL technologies decreased by 4.4%.

The revenues from the sale of these services in 2017 increased by 9.4% on 2016 to over 1.209,5 billion lei. The largest growths in sales were reported by Starnet (+10.8%), Moldtelecom (+9.4%) and Sun Communications (+6.6%).

The average monthly revenue per user of these services rose by 4.4% to 177 lei. The market share of Moldtelecom last year was 64.6%, while of Starnet and Sun Communications – 20.7% and, respectively, 5.1%. The cumulative market share of the other 77 Internet service providers was of 9.6%.
