The solidarity march “Without fear”, mounted in Chisinau in support of the LGBT community, ended with incidents. While the participants marched along Bucuresti St, accompanied by several hundred armed police officers, a group of people consisting of priests and parishioners appeared in their way. These became involved in altercations with the police, IPN reports.

Initially, it was planned that the march will start in the square of the shopping center UNIC, but the sexual minorities and their supporters ultimately set off from Ismail St, marching in silence along Bucuresti St. These were accompanied by columns of armed police officers.

At the intersection of the streets Bucuresti and Vasile Alecsandri, the marchers were met by a group of priests and parishioners. These sang church songs and chanted slogans against the sexual minorities. They also threw eggs at the marchers and tried to reach the column of representatives of the LGBT community, but the police stopped them. Clashes between the group and the police occurred there.

As the situation became tense, the marchers were taken away by police buses. Afterward, the priests splashed holy water on the route of the marchers.

Organized by the Information “Genderdoc-M”, the march in support of the LGBT community was staged the fourth consecutive year. Representatives of the EU Delegation to Moldova and of a number of embassies expressed their support for this event.
