The incidence of traumas and poisonings among children has dropped in the last two years, announced Deputy Health Minister Mihai Ciocanu.

“Whereas two years ago, in 2012 there were reported 32,500 cases of trauma and poisoning among children, today their number dropped by 4,500 cases, which means that this year we estimate the number to stand at only 27,000”, the deputy minister told a press conference.

The statistics include lethal cases in both the under-5 group and the under-18 one.

Mihai Ciocanu says this tendency should be upheld by awareness-raising campaigns that target not just schools but also the family, “because it's the knowledge acquired in the family that is the most solid and determines correct behaviors in the future”.

According to MoH data, traumas and poisonings are among the leading death causes in the under-5 age group in Moldova. For six years now, the REPEMOL ((Regionalization of Pediatric Emergency and Intensive Care Service in Moldova) Project, in cooperation with the authorities, has been increasing awareness among parents of domestic hazards for the under-fives as part of the campaign “A Safe Home for Your Child”.
