In September banks attracted less deposits

The amount of the deposits attracted by banks during September was inferior to that in August, summing up MDL 1,097 mln to MDL 1,182.4 mln in August. The reduction produced, despite the fact that banks increased interest rates. At the same time, in September, the average interest rate for term deposits in MDL increased by 0.63 percentage points, representing 12.62%, and the interest for term deposits in foreign currency increased by 0.04 percentage points, to the level of 5.26%. Data provided by the National Bank show that the volume of term deposits in MDL attracted in September was of MDL 381.8 mln, by 19.9 less than in August. The decrease was provoked especially by the reducing of the volume of attracted deposits from companies by MDL 19.2 mln or 35.6%. As a consequence, the share of term deposits of individuals rose from 86.6% in August to the level of 90.9% from the total volume of term deposits in MDL attracted during September. Deposits with terms from 3 to 6 months represented 42.9% of the total, covering the greatest share of the structure of term deposits attracted in national currency in September, 2006. At the same time, the attracted volume of term deposits in foreign currency decreased by MDL 65.5 mln (8.4%) summing up MDL 715.2 mln (USD 53.7 mln). The reduction has been provoked by the decrease by MDL 87.9 mln or 12.2% of the deposits of individuals. On the other hand, deposits of economic agents increased by MDL 22.4 mln or 38.3%. The modifications in the term structure of the attracted deposits in foreign currency, in comparison to August, show a significant growth – by 6.2 percentage points, to the level of 23.2% of the share of deposits with the term between 1 and 3 months, at a time with the decrease by 3 percentage points and 3.8 percentage points of the quota of those having the term from 3 to 6 months and from 6 to 12 months, respectively.
