Nicolae Costin was a veritable strategist and a defender of the national values. This is how he is remembers by his friends, relatives and colleagues who attended the launch of an album in memory of the first mayor of Chisinau titled “A free country is not built with slaves. Nicolae Costin, promoter of the national renaissance,” Info-Prim Neo reports. The late mayor's wife Iuliana Gorea Costin said this album contains materials about the golden or glory generation of Moldova. “It describes the recent history that those attending and many of our children remember,” said Iuliana Gorea Costin. “It is an album that gives a lesson of honesty, sincerity and devotion. Nicolae Costin, alongside Gheorghe Ghimpu, Ion Hadarca, Mihai Ghimpu, Ion Buga and others, managed to do an important jump from politicians to statesmen. We can now use this lesson to maintain that system of values that means life.” Acting President of Moldova Mihai Ghimpu said Nicolae Costin loved his country and nation. “Many people waited for that period when they could defend the national values. They thought there was no Romanian breath in Bessarabia after 50 years of occupation and manipulation, but the 1980s showed we have people who are ready to defend everything we have,” he said. Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca said Nicolae Costin was the man who launched the positive changes in the 1990s. “We have gratitude and respect for this true man of the nation,” he stated. Stage manager Victor Bucataru said Nicolae Costin was a tactful and clear-sighted man, who appreciated honesty and simplicity. Nicolae Costin was born on April 7, 1936 in Peciste village of Rezina district. He died at the age of 59 on February 16, 1995.
