On June 14, the citizens of Moldova will vote the new local administration. IPN News Agency set the goal to determine how the local public authorities coped during the current term that is coming to an end. Experts, opinion leaders and representatives of civil society from different settlements will assess the activity of the local authorities of the country’s districts and municipalities. Basarabeasca district has 10 settlements and seven mayor’s offices and a population of over 29,000.
A trend is seen in the local elections in Basarabeasca district – the inhabitants do not vote for parties, but for concrete persons. From elections to elections, the population becomes more interested and actively takes part in the electoral and post electoral processes. If a mayor or a councilor promised something and didn’t do it, these will definitely be penalized, said Liuba Prohnitski, long-term observer of Promo-Lex Association in Basarabeasca.
She also said that the seven mayors of the district’s settlements are running for a new term. It is the voters who will decide if these coped or not over the last four years. In Sadaclia, Vasile Baciu held tenure as mayor four consecutive times, while in Bascalia and Carabetovca, Petru Tarlev and Tudor Cazacu held office three times. In the other settlements, the mayors held office one time.
Liuba Prohnitski noted that the voters and election contenders in Basarabeasca hope that the elections will be democratic, transparent and correct. The observers’ mission is to increase the people’s confidence and encourage their participation in the electoral process as well as to make the electoral functionaries more responsible and to contribute to the correct conduct of elections.
The head of the Basarabeasca public association “Bastina” Eugenia Grebinet considers each territorial unit, either big or small, must have its mayor’s office. This way the local problems can be solved easier. As regards the situation over the last four years, the authorities managed the local affairs in a satisfactory way. An example of success is Iordanovca village, where a part of the roads were repaired and a biomass heating station was put into operation, which heats the local nursery and secondary school.
According to Eugenia Grebinet, all the villages of Basarabeasca district need a sewerage system. Policies are also needed in the ecological sector. There should be closer cooperation between the local public authorities and the people so as to ensure better living conditions at local level.
