The head of the State Hydrometeorology Service Ilie Boian said there is no danger of floods during the thaw. “It is growing warmer. The snow is melting during the day, but it freezes again at night. The thaw will last and this is good as we will not experience floods,” Ilie Boian stated for Info-Prim Neo. He said that there may be more water in the small rivers than usual, but this will not affect the settlements. In the Carpathians, where 90% of the flow capacity of the Rivers Prut and Nistru is formed, the layer of snow is within the norm and even smaller in parts. “At the bed of the larger rivers, the level of water is now reduced and there is enough place in the reservoirs for the water coming from melted snow. In Costesti-Stinca, the level of water is by almost six meters lower than the norm,” said Ilie Boian. Earlier, the deputy head of Moldova’s Water Agency Mihail Penkov said Moldovan specialists and their Romanian partners were considering gradually increasing the volume of water discharged from the Costesti-Stinca reservoir, from 42 to 60 cubic meters per second. He stressed it was a measure needed to protect the area from floods.
