The representative of Ilan Shor asked in the businessman’s name for the subscription lists from the Orhei District Electoral Council for collecting the signatures needed for running in the local mayoral elections in Orhei. The Council’s head Victor Sheremet has told IPN that the lists were requested on May 12, IPN reports.
To be able to run, Ilan Shor must present over 1,300 signatures, which is 5% of the total number of voters in Orhei town (over 26,000 people). His representative must submit the required documents by May 14, 5pm.
Ilan Shor is now under house arrest, being investigated in the case of the stealing of billions of lei from three Moldovan banks. Under the Election Code of Moldova, the candidates during the electoral period cannot be arrested or punished administratively without the consent of the electoral body that registered them, except for cases of flagrant offenses.
