Ilan Shor and Viorel Birca questioned by anticorruption officers

The ex-directors of Banca de Economii (BEM) Ilan Shor and Viorel Birca on July 15 were questioned by officers of the National Anticorruption Center within the two criminal cases started over violation of the lending rules by the administration of BEM and over abuse of power that caused significant damage, IPN reports.

According to a communique of the National Anticorruption Center, the two are suspected of fraudulently managing the financial institutions. Ilan Shor and Viorel Birca were classed as suspects and are under judiciary control.

Within the two cases, the prosecutors and anticorruption officers question former presidents of administration boards of the banks, current and former board members and economic entities that got loans that were allegedly released illegally. These carried out searches and made arrests. Ten persons have been charged.

In parallel, a group of inquiry is conducting extended investigations into the case of the three banks. These examine aspects of the injurious management of the state property and loss of the state’s controlling interest in BEM. Different documents were seized from a number of state institutions and a number of high-ranking officials were questioned.
