The Republic of Moldova turned from a success story into a headache and a big disappointment for the development partners. The relations with the development partners have worsened because the European partners understood that the Government of Moldova tried to mislead the development partners with lists of laws and mechanisms and was for now successful. But the Europeans understood it clearly that beyond the negotiated laws, there is also the notion of rule of law and there are captured institutions, secretary general of the Party “Action and Solidarity” Igor Grosu said in the public debate “Relations between Moldova and foreign partners following adoption of mixed electoral system”, that was staged by IPN News Agency.

According to the PAS secretary, European diplomacy implies a little bit of decency and those who want to understand realize very well the attitude of the development partners from the tonality of the European commissioners and other officials. It will be hard for the Republic of Moldova to restore this confidence because Moldova is not the center of universe and the EU has also other problems, conflicts and more problematic states, such as Ukraine, Syria and Turkey. The promoters of the idea modified the electoral system to make sure that they will keep power, to the detriment of the people’s welfare.

Igor Grosu also said the European Union will have a much more reserved attitude to what Chisinau, especially the government, communicates because the whole rhetoric of the government is not credible. In the current conditions, a correct electoral process cannot be ensured, as those from power promise. This is not possible when the state institutions are captured, administrative resources are used, the mass media are mainly controlled, etc.

“In general, the people should understand that it is an unprecedented manipulation campaign whose goal is to divert attention from real problems. I will mention one – the pension system reform – about which they spoke a lot. They said the pensions will be increased by 40%. It was a total failure. Does the PDM speak now about this reform? It says nothing about it. The health system reform failed in several minutes of the launch. So, there is no clear agenda for the people,” stated the secretary general of the PAS.

In another connection, Igor Grosu said the European Union and the people understand very well how those 850,000 signatures in support of the uninominal voting system were collected. The people were forced to sign so as not to lose their jobs. When the new electoral system that was adopted by the parliamentary alliance and the Socialists is implemented, this will favor first of all the parties with money, will limit the vote of the diaspora because the government was scared by the massive vote of 2016 and will also make the elected MPs vulnerable. The goal is for the PDM and PSRM to keep power and this duo works very well.

The public debate “Relations between Moldova and foreign partners following adoption of mixed electoral system” was the 75th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that was organized with support from the Hanns Seidel Foundation of Germany.
