The leader of the Party of Socialists (PSRM) Igor Dodon challenged the results of the local elections in the municipality of Chisinau because he cannot admit defeat, which would mean the start of his party’s fall. Such conclusions were formulated in the talk show “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.
Political analyst Olga Nicolenco said Dodon’s behavior after the local elections is determined by his fear that he may lose political authority. “Socialists’ expectations were much greater. In the parliamentary elections, the Socialists won more because Usatyi was removed from the electoral race. In the local elections, they had to divide the votes together with Usatyi. It’s clear that losing the Chisinau City Hall was very painful for Dodon after he spent very large sums of money in the election campaign. He may have to account to Moscow for this and the financial support for him would be diminished substantially,” she stated.
Journalist Ion Terguta considers that Igor Dodon feels frustrated. “It is a psychological matter. Both Dodon and Grecheanyi lost the elections in competition with Chirtoaca earlier too. Dodon cannot accept this defeat so easily after struggling for the mayoralty of Chisinau during four years and mounting protests. The statements made by Igor Dodon after the elections showed his inner state. Zinaida Grecheanyi, who has more experience, managed to control her emotions,” he said.
Valentin Krylov, the founder and former member of the PSRM, said Igor Dodon’s challenges are not justified. “There could have been serious violations, but there are no reasons for challenging the results of the elections in the capital city. There were observers on behalf of parties and nongovernmental organizations. The whole electoral process was monitored intensely. Dodon and his team make a fuss in order to gain political advantages. This defeat means the start of Igor Dodon’s free fall,” he stated.
