The Transnistrian conflict could be resolved in the second half of next year, if the great players express geopolitical interest in this, President Igor Dodon was quoted by IPN as saying in the program “President Responds”.

According to the official, things could move on in the settlement process after the elections in the U.S. and other countries that play an important role on the geopolitical arena are over. The conflict could be settled when it appears on the first pages of the great powers’ agenda of geopolitical discussions.

“I think the geopolitical players will want to produce a success story here. I believe this will be advantageous not only to us, but also to the Americans, Russians and Europeans,” stated President Dodon.

He noted that during his three years and a half in office, he tried to persuade the great geopolitical players that Moldova should appear in their agenda. He had related discussions with the Presidents of France and Russia and also with the German Chancellor and urged them not to entrust the matter to Romania as this issue does not seem interesting to the neighboring country.

Igor Dodon admitted that his position on the Transnistrian issue has changed during the past three years, becoming more focused and balanced. “In 2017, I formulated the idea of a balanced foreign policy not accidentally. In 2015, I was much more categorical on particular political issues. But I realized that namely a balanced position on the domestic and foreign policy is a way out for Moldova. If I hadn’t realized this, I wouldn’t have formed a coalition with Maia Sandu,” he stated.

In another development, Igor Dodon said the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict will be one of his main tasks if he decides to run for a new term.
