President Igor Dodon will take part in the activities organized in Tiraspol on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the peacekeeping mission. In an interview for the Russian TV channel Rossia 24, he said he will confer state awards on Russian peacekeepers in appreciation of their mission in the region, IPN reports.

“For the first time I plan to take part in the joint activities in Transnistria next week. This has never happened. No President went to Transnistria on this occasion earlier. Moreover, next week I intend to give state awards of the Republic of Moldova to Moldovan and Transnistrian soldiers, if they accept,” stated President Dodon.

As to the relations between the two sides of the Nistru, Igor Dodon said the aggression that existed 25 years ago no longer exists. The people communicate a lot between them. “I have many acquaintances and relatives in Transnistria and we have many things in common,” he noted, adding the border on the Nistru should disappear as swiftly as possible.

Asked about the possibility of closing the joint checkpoints on the border with Ukraine if it’s proven that they cause economic damage to the region, Dodon said he would plead for their closure.
