Former President Igor Dodon said the record inflation witnessed in the Republic of Moldova is a proof of the amateurism of the current government. The annulment of the VAT and excise duty on oil products for a definite period of time would lead to a reduction in fuel prices and to a subsequent decline in the prices of products and services. The government’s incompetence could be penalized by the citizens by mass protests organized by the leaders of a number of political parties, IPN reports.

The former President of Moldova called on the government to repeal the law on the oil products market as this promotes the economic interests of big oil importers to the detriment of the population. Reducing the excise duty and VAT rate on oil products is a solution to ensure reasonable prices for products and services.

“Inflation in the Republic of Moldova stands at 27%, while in Russia and Ukraine it is at 16-17%. The prices of energy resources will continue to rise. The increase in all the prices is based on the prices of gas, electricity, gasoline and diesel fuel. I urged the government to annul the excise duty and VAT on gasoline and diesel fuel at least for a limited period of time. This will lead to a decrease of 10-11 lei in fuel prices. If such a decision is taken today, fuels will be sold for 20 lei a liter next week. This will influence the price of all the products. But the government does not take these proposals into account,” Igor Dodon stated in the talk show “Key Issue” on NTV Moldova channel.

Dodon accuses the government of fully subjugating the justice system, of censoring the press and of fully impoverishing the population. He noted that a number of political parties are ready to unite and stage antigovernment protests.

“When time comes, I will rally the people to protests. We know how to do this as we organized hundreds of protests. The protests should be mounted together, not by each party separately. All those who are against the government should combine forces. Who is against? PSRM and PCRM, surely! The Chisinau City Hall is against the government and we see this daily. Ex-Premier Chicu, who criticizes in a reasonable and competent way, is also against. Everyone’s forces should be united,” stated Igor Dodon.

According to him, the reopening of the famous case in which he is accused of taking bribe from the former leader of PDM Vlad Plahotniuc is an attempt by the government to distract the public’s attention from the economic and social crisis experienced by society.
