The President of the Republic of Moldova, Igor Dodon, says that there are three possible scenarios after the Government assumes responsibility for amending the Law on the Prosecutor's Office on November 6. If a compromise is not reached by 3:00 pm, when the Parliament session is held, the Speaker of the Parliament, Zinaida Greceanîi, will announce the PSRM actions related to the censure motion, IPN reports.
After consulting with the groups in the parliamentary majority, Igor Dodon has stated that citizens do not want parliamentary elections, which is why he urged MPs to stay calm and reasonable, to take into account the national interest and not to pitch the country into early election.
According to the head of state, the PSRM mainly proposes that the Prime Minister Maia Sandu withdraw the initiative to assume responsibility, an action contrary to the recently signed political agreement. Otherwise, the Socialists are ready at 3pm to file a censure motion.
Igor Dodon says that the members of the ACUM Bloc are ready to give up the bill on Government’s assuming of responsibility, provided that today, by the end of the day, the Parliament votes, in two readings, a draft law to include the reason stated in the Government’ assuming of responsibility.
The president also has maintained that the risk of early elections is very high, although it would be preferable to avoid them. "I suggested, as president, to do everything possible to discuss, find a compromise, I suggested to everyone not to burn bridges," said Igor Dodon. Even in case of a censure motion, a new PSRM-ACUM majority could be made, the head of state stressed.
On November 6, the Government took responsibility for amending the Law on the Prosecutor's Office, so that the Prime Minister would be responsible for preselecting the candidates for the Prosecutor General's office. Maia Sandu said that the changes made in September this year did not lead to the expected results of choosing an honest and brave prosecutor. Although the Ministry of Justice set up a special commission to pre-select candidates for the position of Prosecutor General, before presenting them to the Superior Council of Prosecutors, this task could not be fulfilled because the members of the commission did not have access to sufficient data that would confirm the integrity and professionalism of the candidates. Maia Sandu claims that she has found no other solution than to submit to Parliament the initiative to assume responsibility for amending the Law on the Prosecutor's Office, so that the Prime Minister could proposes two candidates for the position of Prosecutor General.
