One billion dollars was stolen from the foreign exchange reserves of the National Bank by using Banca de Economii in this respect, the leader of the Party of Socialists (PSRM) Igor Dodon said in an interview for the Press Club “Social Resonance”, IPN reports.

According to Dodon, a genial scheme was devised in the offices of the PLDM and PDM, in collusion with businessman Ilan Shor. “Those from power could no longer do with the 2-3 million euros a month they earned by acts of corruption, contraband and thefts and thus decided to rob the central bank. For the purpose, they needed to cause a scandal around a bank and chose Banca de Economii, which has the largest number of depositors and whose majority shareholding belonged to the state. After stealing money from Banca de Economii, by a secret decision, the National Bank covered the theft in order to avoid a revolt on the part of the depositors. A large part of this money was used in the election campaign,” he said.

The Socialist leader also said that this large-scale fraud led to the depreciation of the national currency. “After stealing the money, they could not take it out of the country in Moldovan currency. Thus, through the agency of the banks they control, they purchased an enormous quantity of foreign currency on the home market. As a result, the shortage of currency led to the collapse of the leu,” he stated.

Igor Dodon noted that besides the other leaders of the ruling parties, Iure Leanca, Dorin Dragutanu and the prosecutor general were also aware of this scheme, and that he informed the embassies working in Moldova about this.

The leader of the PSRM warned that Moldova will soon face a financial collapse following this fraud as the Europeans will no longer support Moldova financially. “A European high-ranking official told me that Ukraine is now the EU’s priority. As regards Moldova, they want to see the reforms first. In fact, the leaders of the former government during five years blackmailed the EU authorities, saying Moldova will be occupied by Russia if they do not give us money,” he stated.
