In Moldova, the institution of the family is undermined. Depopulation, mass migration, rise in the number of divorces and expanding social unsafety led to profound changes in the creation of families, threatening Moldova’s genofund and the existence of Moldovans in time, President Igor Dodon stated in the ceremony held to inaugurate the Family Year that was earlier proclaimed by presidential decree, IPN reports.

According to President Dodon, the Republic of Moldova is among the top states that rapidly lose population and remain without people. The fact that the exodus covers mainly young people is alarming. A practically irrecoverable loss of labor force is witnessed. In 1991, the number newborns was by over 26,000 higher than that of deaths. Now the natural growth is negative and the number of deaths is higher than of births. A family in Moldova has by one child on average.

The official noted there are villages in Moldova where no child was born during a year. Effort should be made to cope with these challenges. The salvation of the nation should be the mission of any government and the preoccupation of the academic community and civil society. “All the decision makers should realize the risks of such a situation and should more firmly implement efficient social policies so as to increase the resilience of families,” stated Igor Dodon.

In the event, five Moldovan couples who recently celebrated the 50th wedding anniversary received presents from the charitable foundation “From the heart” that is patronized by First Lady Galina Dodon. President Dodon handed them over by 10,000 lei in award.

The program of events dedicated to the Family Year includes actions to promote, protect and support the integrity of families. There will be worked out a program to support the young families acquire dwelling. Another program will aim to increase the childbirth allowance to 15,000 lei for the first child, 20,000 lei for the second child and 30,000 lei for the third and next children.

Another initiative will render homage to long-living couples as a symbol of wisdom, faithfulness and respect between spouses. Weekly, representatives of the Presidential Office will visit couples that celebrate the 50th, 60th or 70th wedding anniversaries. Towards the new school year, schoolbags with school supplies will be provided also to second and third graders, not only to first graders as until now.

Those who attended the inaugural ceremony could see a performance of music that involved national singers.
