Igor Dodon’s initiative to amend the Constitution and obtain additional powers to be able to dissolve the legislative body is a populist move by which the Head of State paves the way for the future parliamentary elections for the Party of Socialists. Such conclusions were formulated in the program “Emphasis on today” on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.

Unaffiliated MP Anatolie Zagorodnyi said Igor Dodon’s initiative to amend the Constitution will not be supported by the parliamentary alliance. “These are some populist statements. He has a well-planned scenario and prepares the public opinion for a new election campaign. I’m sure that these proposals will not enjoy support in Parliament,” he stated.

Liberal-Democratic MP Vadim Pistrinciuc noted that Igor Dodon’s scenario is not appropriate and the Head of State will only lose. “Dodon continues to promote the interests of the party that he led. He does not contribute to establishing a balance in society, but divides it further. Dodon makes effort to fulfill his electoral promises, but it is too much to demand that the Constitution should be revised for the purpose,” he said.

Nicolae Osmochescu, ex-judge of the Constitutional Court, said the President’s initiative to amend the Constitution so that he is able to dissolve Parliament is not a serious political exercise.

President Igor Dodon on February 28 proposed a draft law to amend the Constitution. The proposal defines five new cases when the President can initiate the dissolution of Parliament.
