“The organization of a constitutional referendum represents the first concession made by the oligarchic government,” the leader of the Party of Socialists Igor Dodon said, commenting on the Head of Parliament’s announcement that the parliamentary alliance is ready to examine an initiative to hold a referendum on the direct election of the head of state during the first sittings of the spring session, IPN reports.
“But this is not enough. We must continue to mount peaceful protests and to exert consistent pressure until we obtain the dissolution of Parliament and early legislative elections are announced,” Igor Dodon wrote on a social networking site.
As regards the protesters’ demand to dissolve Parliament and call early elections, Speaker Andrian Candu said today that the legislature cannot dissolve itself as the Constitution bans this and the Constitutional Court confirmed that this is not possible. The possibility of early elections will be discussed in March-April, if the new head of state cannot be elected.
