The president of the Party of Socialists Igor Dodon said President Maia Sandu commits the same abuse against the national identity as other unionists before her and tries to amend the Constitution, to change the name of the language, to stir things up in society, to divide the Moldovans according to the identity and linguistic criteria. The reaction comes after Maia Sandu in the PSACE session said that the Romanian language will be introduced into the Constitution when a sufficient number of MPs ready to vote for such an initiative are there in Parliament, IPN reports.

In a post on Facebook, Igor Dodon recommends Maia Sandu not to touch the Constitution and the Moldovan language, especially because the absolute majority of the citizens consider they speak Moldovan. According to him, not the name of the language is now the priority of the people and the country.

Socialist MP Nicolae Pascaru also reacted, saying that such statements as those made by Maia Sandu only divide society and divert attention from the country’s real problems - pandemic, economic and political crisis - and also undermine Moldova’s statehood, being inspired by foreign forces under whose patronage Maia Sandu is. “The option of the majority of people who say that they speak Moldovan should be respected. The almost 2/3 of the citizens who say that the language is Moldovan have the right to call the mother tongue as they want,” he stated.
