President Igor Dodon argues that in order to join the Eurasian Union, all agreements signed with the European Union must be cancelled, including the Association Agreement with the EU. And if discussions about the cancellation of the Agreement with the EU start, "other problems will arise". The statements were made on NTV Moldova special, IPN reports.
"There are no other options, because they contradict each other. This is the observer status, which we have now that allows us to keep these agreements. And this principle of balanced foreign policy, which we have discussed and keep attaining systemically, step by step, trying to implement it, resides in making friends with everyone. But this is not so simple,” noted Igor Dodon.
The president referred to the recent visits of John Bolton, National Security Advisor to US President Donald Trump, and Russian Defense Minister Sergei Soigu, and to his meetings with them. "Can you imagine the discussions we had, given the current situation. That is why, to become members of the Eurasian Union, under the circumstances of the Association Agreement implementation, is practically impossible”, said the head of state.
Asked if the Republic of Moldova could cancel the Association Agreement, Igor Dodon said that if such discussions started, "other problems" would arise.
In other news, the head of state said that during his visit to Brussels, at the meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, he reiterated that the Republic of Moldova would not join NATO. According to the president, "even if they respect the neutrality of the Republic of Moldova, this status should be recorded in a signed document, which guarantees the neutrality of the Republic of Moldova and is internationally recognized".
