The president of honor of the Party of Socialists Igor Dodon was summoned again to the Prosecutor General’s Office for being questioned in the criminal case concerning the purchase of electricity in 2008-2009.
“He does not admit his guilt in the offense of which he is suspected. Today he made statements about the circumstances of the deed of which he is suspected and presented his position,” press officer of the PGO Mariana Cherpec stated for IPN. The investigation continues and prosecutors are to take a decision.
The Prosecutor General’s Office said Igor Dodon is investigated as a suspect in Energocom case. He is suspected of abuse of authority in the interests of a criminal group in 2008-2009, when he served as first Deputy Prime Minister and minister of economy and trade. From the position he held then, he issued an appraisal based on which a contract for the purchase of electrical energy for the Republic of Moldova was signed in May 2008 at a time when SA “Energocom” already negotiated and signed two contracts for the supply of power at a price that was by 29% lower.
As a result of those acts, the state, in the person of SA “Energocom”, was caused damage estimated at US$ 11 927 173, which is equal to 123 957 916 lei. The money was later transferred to the accounts of offshore companies. Simultaneously, those actions led to a rise in electricity rates, affecting the rights of end users in Moldova.
When going out of the PGO, Igor Dodon said that in 2008 the Republic of Moldova managed to purchase electrical energy at the most advantageous price in the region. “I’m sure I do not have any blame. I cannot be a suspect in this case. I want to reiterate what I said in May 2008: then the Republic of Moldova obtained the most advantageous price of electricity in the region,” stated the politician.
