The European integration process in the Republic of Moldova failed because of the politicians who have ruled the country during the last seven years and who are supported, including by the external development partners, the chairman of the Party of Socialists Igor Dodon said at a press conference given after the PACE session in Strasbourg, IPN reports.

“Under the European integration slogans, most of the indicators that characterize the democratic institutions witnessed regression. In 2009, the European integration was supported by over 70% of the country’s population. The external partners provided record support for the 25 years of independence. The EU institutions, the World Bank and the IMF offered loans of about US$1 billion and non-reimbursable assistance of about US$700 million,” stated the politician.

He added that the political support was very great, noting that the Association Agreement was signed in 2014 and a visa free regime was granted. “Despite this considerable financial and political support, most of the figures decline. The democracy index shows a worsening of the situation. The economic freedom index is also worse, as the economic competitiveness is. For the first time, the Republic of Moldova is named the country with the most corrupt legal system in the world,” said Igor Dodon.

He noted that Moldova’s success story failed as the European integration process in the country that was supported by the foreign partners during seven years did.

Igor Dodon underlined that if the partners in Strasbourg continue to believe statements about the risk of the Russian factor and to support those who are in power, the people’s confidence will decrease and Moldova will face the risk of a social explosion.
